WW1 absent voters postcards

Naval and Military Voters List

Many men who had served in the forces did not return to their homes immediately at the end of the First World War. Ceredigion Archives has two series of postcards which were sent out to men (and one woman!) registered as naval or military voters and returned by them to the electoral registration officer.

The cards asked the voters whether they should remain on the Absent Voters List and be able to vote by post, or be struck off that register and consequently be able to vote at a polling station.

The collection of cards and the database (compiled by Archives volunteer Sian Affonso) provide the names of military voters who survived the war. As researchers of the First World War will know it is usually not difficult to discover who died in the war, but far more problematic to discover the names of those who survived.
