Writ Books

Ref: RE/PS/2
Date(s): 1846-1884
Level: Sub-Series
Extent: 6 Vols.
Scope and Content: Writ Books

Writ Books recording writs received by the sheriff.
For example, George Griffiths Williams' Writ Book contains details of 85 writs received between 28 February 1876 and 2 February 1877. His assignment of writs to his successor, Thomas Ford Hughes, dated 17 February 1877, contains details of 286 unexecuted writs dated 24 September 1862 - 29 January 1877. Most of these are writs of Fiera Facias (i.e. 'cause it to be done'), commanding the sheriff to seize a defendant's property to the value of the debt or damages owed to the plaintiff.
In the case of the older writs, many of the entries are endorsed that the defendant had no effects, that the plaintiff had withdrawn, that the writ was not to be executed until instructed, that the defendant was under protection of the court, was bankrupt, or 'defendant non est' (dead, presumably).
