Scope and Content: Cardiganshire Tithe Commutation Files

The series mainly comprises material relating to the commutation of tithes in various parishes in Cardiganshire: letters and notices from the tithe commission, and notices and minutes of parochial meetings. The tithe commission required notices to be published in a local newspaper in the weeks before the parochial meeting, calling for the commutation of a parish's tithes, with copies of the paper to be sent to the tithe commission office, and duplicates preserved, to be exhibited at the parochial meeting. The series contains copies (often multiple copies filed under different parishes) of the ‘Carmarthen Journal’ for 2, 9 March; 6, 13, 20, 27 April; 4 May; 1, 8, 22, 29 June; 7, 14 September: all 1838. And for 15, 22 January 1841; 25 April 1845; and a page from 5 November 1886. The majority of the files were in binders, most of which were decayed and have been discarded. The comparatively well preserved Llanychaearn binder has been kept as an example. The series also contains a number of other files relating to tithe rent charges, sequestrations etc., 1841-1886.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by parish or township. The parish of Llanddewibrefi was commuted township by township; Gwynfil and Blaenpennal are filed with Llanio, and Prysg and Carfan are filed together. Llanfair Clydogau is filed with Llangybi.

Associated material: The tithe commission's records are held in the Public Record Office, mainly in IR 18. The commission's list of Cardiganshire tithe districts is held at IR 90/46, sealed original Cardiganshire awards and agreements are held as TITH 2/314 (tithe districts A-LLANF) and 2/315 (LLANG-Z), and tithe apportionments are held in IR 29.
