Reference: [GB 0212] MUS/327
Date(s):
Level: Fonds
Extent: 1 item
Scope and content: Three leaves bound together as 12 page booklet containing accounts of relating to the smack Ospray in the years 1839-1843. Ospray was built at Aberaeron in 1831 or 1836. Its capacity is variously given as 35 and 49 tons. In this period the owners were: Mary Lewis, widow, of Aberystwyth (32 shares); David Jones, Gent., of London (16 shares); David Lewis of Aberystwyth (16 shares). David Lewis was also master until 10 June 1842, when John Jenkins took over at London, although Lewis again became master in 1844. Ospray was lost off Milford Haven on 12 September 1871.

The accounts, which include several references to 'David', seem to have belonged to Mary Lewis. They detail monies paid and received to and from named individuals, expenses incurred and sundries carried. There is also a payment from Mary Lewis to John Jones, 'for servitude on board the Smack Ospray'. There are mentions of London and in 1842 payments were received by messengers from Newport, Rotterdam, Glasgow, Chatham/?Charleston, Liverpool and Gloucester, giving an indication of Ospray's range.
