MUS/230/1/9: Capt. Roberts and the Liberty Ship Samkansa

Material relating to the Liberty Ship Samkansa in the period 1943-1947. Liberty Ships delivered to the UK were SAM ships; all had names beginning with Sam for Uncle Sam. Samkansa was built at Baltimore in 1943 and was delivered into the management of the Orient Steam Navigation Company. Initially commanded by a Captain Blake, Captain Roberts took command from mid 1944 to 1947, when the ship passed out of Orient Steam management and was sold to the Hadley Shipping Co. of London to be renamed Cerinthus. The ship sailed under the Panamanian flag from 1952, successively renamed the Phassa, Urania and Concord Venture, before being scrapped in Japan in 1970.

After voyaging to and from Bangkok, the ship was loaded munitions intended to aid the suppression of the Java revolt, unloading at Soerabaja/Surabaya.
