NATURE AND CONTENT: Photocopy: Letter from John R. Haslam, late of Tyn Llwyn, to the Duke, written after the former’s departure from Tyn Llwyn to Voel, Anglesea. It appears that Mr. Haslam left Hafod after an incident involving Mr. Kendall and this letter contains his side of the story (see FOH.A/01/10, where Mr. Kendall’s ‘drunken freak’ is described). He recommends appointing a foreman to assist with the work and expresses doubts as to the suitability of Mr. Chapman for the role as Clerk of Works, due to the latter’s being ‘the intimate associate and companion of Mr. Kendall’. Keary states that it might be preferable to lower the rent and let the farm to an Englishman, who ‘would probably improve the farm’; a Welsh tenant ‘will do nothing and most likely undo many of the improvements which have been made’.
