New Quay Harbour Company: The Formation and Operation of the Company

Reference: DB/96/2
Title: Series 2: New Quay Harbour Company: The Formation and Operation of the Company
Dates: 1833-1953
Level of description: Series
Extent: 72 Files/ Items
Scope and Content:
This part of the collection charts the story of the Company from that inception to its eventual take-over by the local authority, in the form of New Quay Urban District Council, in the early 1950s. It comprises the originating Deed of Partnership and Covenant of Agreement; material relating to shares held in, and dividends paid by, the Company; documents regarding Harbour Tolls and Dues, including the leasing of same; documents relating to planned improvements to the harbour; Cases and Opinions relating to various legal disputed within which the Company was involved; correspondence; Byelaws; and the Statutory Instruments which brought the Harbour Company to a close.

This Series also contains Deeds of Settlement relating to the New Quay Mutual Ship Insurance Society (DB/96/2/13-15). Although the activities of the Society are obviously aligned with the activities/operations of the New Quay Harbour Shipping Company, their exact inter-relationship is, at present, unknown (April 2015). Material relating to Aberystwyth (DB/96/2/4) and Bristol (DB/96/2/25) is also included. It is thought that these probably represent comparative material; used by the Company, either in its day-to-day operations, or at points of proposed change, such as, for instance the Act for Repairing, Enlarging and Preserving Aberystwyth Harbour which could potentially have been useful when New Quay was considering enlarging and/or improving its own Harbour.

The material is arranged chronologically, from earliest date to latest.
