Reference: [GB 0212] WP/5/2
Title: Box of photographs
Date(s): 1870-1905
Level: File
Extent: 26 items

Scope and Content:
Red leather case from C.R. Christie, Edinburgh, containing 26 cabinet cards and similar that can be dated to the period c. 1870-1905. One of the earliest images, a copy of a portrait of Lady Owen (No. 2), was commissioned by Herbert Hope when commander. Still a lieutenant when he married Katherine Kewley in 1905, Herbert Hope had attained the rank of captain by 1917. The balance of subjects reflects the impression that Herbert Hope put together this collection, including, as it does, members of his and his bride’s interconnected families. Many of the cards have annotations in pencil or ink, those in ink apparently dating to the period between 1940 and 1959 (see No. 7).
Name of photographer’s studio is given below each description.
