Title: Box of cartes de visite
Date(s): 1861-1905
Level: File
Extent: 49 items

Scope and Content:
Green box with curved spine labelled in gold ‘Photographs’, purchased from John Lewis, Oxford Street, London. Contains 49 cartes de visite, one card with fragment of photograph adhering and one un-mounted photograph. Mostly labelled, these can be dated to the period 1861-1905.
But for the portraits of Philippa and Maurice Hope (c. 1905) (45-6), the pictures all appear to belong to the period between c. 1860 and 1894. Given that they include several of Admiral Charles Webley Hope including one of his grave (2-7), a large number of his family (8-25), as well as childhood and adolescent portraits of the Kewleys (29-35), it is possible that it was a collection that belonged to or was prepared by, Ellen, the admiral’s widow (d. 1897), that was passed to her youngest son, Herbert, who married Katherine Kewley (‘married to me/He’, No. 33).
Name of photographer’s studio is given below each description.
