Turnpike Trusts

Ref: CDC/TT

Records of Cardiganshire Turnpike Trusts.

Cardiganshire received its first Turnpike Act in 1770. This

allowed for the establishment of Turnpike Trusts, which

could collect a toll in exchange for providing and

maintaining roads. The Act divided the county into two, the

boundary between the Lower and Upper Roads Boards being

roughly from Lampeter to the mouth of the river Aeron.
