The owner, identified on the endpaper, was David Thomas (1868-1892), the son of Mary and David Thomas of Alderdate, Felinfach. His father was a stone mason and publican - the Aldergate was a pub.

David had two brothers who survived to adulthood (Daniel and Jenkin) and one sister, Anne. Two other boys had been buried as infants - William aged 12 months in 1873 and Thomas in 1875 aged 13 months.

Jenkin was two years older than David and they both attended the Presbyterian College in Carmarthen. David lodged at 11 Lammas Street.

Sadly, brother Daniel died in 1883 at the age of 19. David himself was only 24 when he died on 2nd November 1892. By this time, he was Minister at the Unitarian Church in Cwmbach, Aberdare.

The diary contains entries for every day, including the purchase of a vioin, and the hiring of a piano in Carmarthen, visits to family and friends in the Felinfach area, observations on sermons attended at Rhydygwin Chapel, routes and means of travel to Carmarthen, routines of study at the Presbyterian College and other more general observations.
