Title: Papers of E.M.H. Blake, nee Fowler
Date(s): 1939 - 2008
Level: Sub-fonds
Extent: 3 series

Creator(s): Blake, Elizabeth Margarita Helen, nee Fowler (1931-1988)

Administrative History:
Elizabeth Margarita Helen Fowler was born 24 March 1931. She grew up in New Quay, studying at Aberaeron Comprehensive in the late 1940s then attended University College Wales, Aberystwyth from 1950-1954 studying Geography. She became a teacher, first at Llanidoes Secondary School then moved to Portsmouth. She married Bill Blake in 1960 and then relocated to Bristol in 1965. Rita Blake died in 1988.

Archival History:
The papers in this collection remained in the hands of E.M.H. Fowler after the death of her father G.H. Fowler. Her daughters, Maggie Goodger and Eleanor Blake, originally contacted the National Maritime Museum to donated their grandfather's and mother's papers. The Museum recommended donation to the Tyne and Wear Archives since Captain Fowler sailed from Newcastle. Tyne and Wear could not take the collection as the family was not from the area. It was suggested to donate to the Ceredigion Archives since the Fowler Family were from New Quay.

Scope and Content:
This sub-fonds contains the personal papers of Rita Blake, mainly compromising papers relating to her education in Wales and career as a teacher. The collection also includes a selection of personal correspondence received by her and her husband Bill Blake and financial bills and receipts from local businesses in New Quay and Aberystwyth. This collection is a valuable source of material relating to the history of the University College Wales, Aberystwyth and local businesses, tourist attractions and local history in New Quay and Aberystwyth.
