Cardiganshire Jurors Books

Ref: RE/PQ/2
Date(s): 1826-1900
Level: Sub-Series
Extent: 36 Files
Scope and Content: Jurors Books

Manuscript volumes containing lists of men qualified to serve as Jurors for the year, mainly 1826-1858. The Jurors are listed, alphabetized by first letter, within parishes and townships, which are arranged within the upper and lower divisions of the hundreds of Genau'r-glyn, Ilar, Moeddyn, Pennardd and Tredreyr. An individual entry gives the Juror's abode, his name, his title or calling (esquire, gentleman, farmer, hatter, mariner, currier etc.), and qualification (freehold, leasehold or poor rate).
Later books, post c.1832, also give the Juror's Poor Rate assessment and, post c.1851, his inhabited house duty assessment, where appropriate.
Most of the books are signed and dated by the Clerk of the Peace; the books for 1826-1828, 1842 are unsigned.
From 1866 a column for observations is frequently used to note Special Jurors and the Quarter Sessions or Assizes at which a Juror served.

Extent: 6 Files
Scope and Content: Cardiganshire Petty Sessions Case Papers

Many of the papers are numbered, but the numbering is not strictly contemporaneous, as the occasional stray (e.g. no. 521, 1893) demonstrates. It probably reflects the order in which the papers were filed away. This may also be an explanation for the duplication of the numbers 565-568 at the end of one bundle and the start of the next.
