Acquisition/ transfer details
The collection was deposited with Ceredigion Archives in 2013, by a private depositor; its original provenance is not known [April 2015].

Scope and content
The collection covers the pre-formation, formation, operation/ ongoing administration, and the eventual transfer into local government hands, of the New Quay Harbour Company.

The material, dating from 1787 until 1953, comprises documents relating to legal matters â€" the Company’s foundation, copies of Acts, copies of local Byelaws, and several legal disputes in which it was involved; records relating to property â€" title deeds, leases (including of tolls and dues), associated bills of costs, etc.; financial records, notably those concerning shareholders; correspondence; and a small number of more ephemeral items â€" a list of house name, and of ships, in New Quay, for example.

Whilst the material, on the whole, relates to New Quay, in the County of Cardiganshire (as was, now Ceredigion), west Wales, some material relates to other places in Cardiganshire (namely, the harbours of Aberystwyth and Aberaeron), and one document to Bristol Harbour.

Medium
All of the material is in hard-copy form, paper and or parchment based, with some plans included, and one photograph.

Condition
Some of the documents are in a rather fragile condition, although useable with care.

Appraisal/ destruction/ scheduling
All catalogued material is subject to permanent retention.
Duplicate copies of notices of Annual Meetings (DB/96/2/56 x 7 copies; DB/96/2/57 x 6 copies) were not retained.

Accruals
Accruals may occur, but are not currently expected (April 2015).

System of arrangement
The collection represents an artificial gathering of material, whose original order has been lost. The material has been catalogued by date, in order to best represent the documents, the organisations’ activities, and the Company’s narrative history in the most coherent manner: from instigation; through its active, sometimes contentious, life; to its eventual demise (in its original form at least).

The collection is thus catalogued as two Series: DB/96/1 relates to material which pre-dates the formation of the New Quay Harbour Company; DB/96/2 relates to the formation and operation of the Company until it was taken over by New Quay Urban District Council in the 1950s.

Original spelling within the documents has been retained, with modern spellings included alongside (where it has been possible to ascertain these).
