Material relating to the James family of Gilwern, 4 Buarth Road, Aberystwyth: John James (postman, b. 1875 Aberystwyth, d. 1936), his wife Hannah Mary (b. 1875 Llansantffraed, d. 1944), their children Evan David Emrys (b. 1902), Ann Mary (b. 1903, d. 1980), John ‘Johnny’ Stanley (b. 1905, d. 1984).

1. Memorial card, ‘In Affectionate Remembrance of’, Thomas, younger son of David Davies Esq., of the Gastle Green, Cardigan, 27 years old, d. 1 August 1864, interred at St Mary’s 6 August the same year.

2-3. ‘In Loving Remembrance … In Loving Memory of Mary Ann Evans’, daughter of John and Ann Evans, Mount Cottage, Llanon, d. 19 October 1899, aged 29, interred at Ebbw Vale Cemetery, 24 October. Two copies, Welsh and English language.

In black-edged envelope addressed to Mr & Mrs James of Gilwern, Buarth Road, Aberystwyth.

1. Studio portrait of a woman, with an unidentified animal at her feet, flanked by two men, all well-dressed, against a formal painted backdrop but on a straw or grass floor. J.A. Boston Photographer with galleries at Durango and Silverton, Colorado. Silverton was the county seat of the San Juan mining district and was liked to the nearby railroad town of Durango by a narrow gauge track.

2. Studio portrait of a woman, flanked by two men, from the studio of A & G Taylor, Duke Street, Cardiff. Detached from backing.

3. Group or family portrait, from the studio of H.H. Davies, Pier St. Aberystwyth.

1924-1925, 1929

1-3. Personal letters, the first two written from Cardiff in the month of the 1924 General Election (October 29th), the third from Dublin in the following year. They are partly taken up with political matters and mentioning Ramsay Macdonald (favourably), Stanley Baldwin and Eamon de Valera.

1. ‘In the office, Saturday Morning … My dear dear sweet diddums …’ Letter written in the month of the 1924 general election, held on the 29th, at the time of the Zinoviev letter. The writer thanks his correspondent for hers, then discusses Ramsey Macdonald, at the time Labour Party and sometimes Prime Minister, who the writer had seen get a warm reception at the, very modest little café … where the Labour enthusiasts generally gather’. There is also mention of Baldwin’s speech that afternoon at the Empire, possibly the Empire Theatre, Cardiff. Signed ‘Jack’.

2. ’94 Gelligaer St., Cardiff, Thursday night … My own darling girl …’ similar in tone to previous. The writer expresses the opinion that the Liberal Party is dying out and that Ramsay Macdonald is, ‘really the most outstanding figure in contemporary European politics’. First page only.
Gelligaer Street is a street of terraced houses that is less grand than Buarth Road.

3. Note on Trinity Hall (Dublin) headed paper, addressed to ‘My dear ?nannie and signed ‘Jack’. The writer had talked to and had tea with de Valera the previous night. De Valera was then campaigning for a republican Free State and would co-found Fianna Fáil in the following year.

4. Letter from E. Moore of ‘Gilwern’, Trentham Rd., Stoke-on-Trent, a final note before ‘their’ arrival, requesting, ‘just a cup of tea, bread and butter, and fish or ham’, on their arrival. In the 1911 census returns, the James’ of Gilwern had university student lodgers.
